From San Jose take the Pan American Highway North. Drive 2½ hours north passing through the exits of the following towns: Alajuela, Grecia, Naranjo, Palmares, San Ramón and Puntarenas. You must stay on the Pan American Highway. 30 minutes after the turn off to Puntarenas turn right 100 meters (1 block) before the Lagarto River Bridge where you will find a large sign that says Monteverde, onto a winding gravel road. From this entrance drive straight forward another 2 hours without detouring at any of the turn offs. When you reach a major intersection in Santa Elena (roughly 35 kms from the highway and after having passed a small toll booth ¢100 voluntary toll) you turn right following the signs to Monteverde. Monteverde Lodge will be on your right hand approximately 800 meters from this intersection. There will be a very large sign welcoming you!
